I visited Fiji as a child in the late 1970’s (yes I really am that old!) with my family.  It was so long ago I can’t recall everything we did, but what I do remember is the stuff that makes for wonderful childhood memories.  Long days just swimming in the sea, building sandcastles and late nights eating at those all you can eat buffets with ice-cream and chocolate aplenty. It was exactly what a great beach holiday should be.

These are some of the things that  I remember of my family holiday in Fiji:

Terry-towelling jumpsuits: Oh yes I will admit to wearing a terry-towelling jumpsuit and I loved it.  For those of you too young or too cool to admit you know what I am talking about, here is a refresher.  Although I am pretty sure mine had a pocket with trim on it… somewhere, but now I am wondering exactly where it fit!Jumpsuit

Swimming with Fishes: Probably my most vivid memory of this childhood holiday was swimming in the crystal clear ocean and seeing a school a tiny angel fish coming towards me.  They were just going about their daily business, but I had never seen anything so beautiful so close to me before.  I just remember trying to stay as still as possible as the fish swam around me.

Funny friends: Looking back now, my parents would not have been much older than I am now when we took that holiday, and I can recall them making new friends, who of course had kids my age so that we could all play.  We would all muck around in the pool together, enjoy dinner together and then head back to our rooms before doing it all over again.  For some reason, I still remember one of my parent’s new friends seemed to be a little eccentric, so much so he would end up walking into the pool because he just wouldn’t pay attention to where he was walking.  As a kid it was such a funny thing to watch a grown adult end up in a pool fully dressed, as a an adult, I guess he had a couple of drinks over dinner!

Looking back I find it fascinating that these are the memories that have stuck with me into adulthood of that family holiday. I remember it as a happy and carefree time, the kind of experience that you hope everyone can remember.

So why not tell me some of the childhood memories of your family holidays.
